Grayson Perry: Expulsion from Number 8 Eden Close

This scene shows Tim as a computer science university student. He is leaving his former life with his mother and step-father behind to be welcomed by his girlfriend’s upper middle class family from Tunbridge Wells, an affluent town in south east England. Perry visited Tunbridge Wells as part of his research for these tapestries and the interior design choices in the scene reflect the tastes of the middle classes that dominate this region.

Tim and his girlfriend’s expression echo The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, a 15th century fresco by the Italian Early Renaissance artist Masaccio. Like the biblical Adam and Eve, they appear to be guiltily leaving an argument with frustrated parents behind them, passing through a rainbow towards a civilised dinner party at his girlfriend’s family home.
