Pre A1 Starters (YLE)
Pre A1 Starters, formerly known as YLE Starters, is the first of three Cambridge English: Young Learners tests. These exams are specifically designed for children aged 7 to 12 to help them learn English step-by-step. By starting with the Starters exam, your child builds a solid foundation and a positive attitude towards language qualifications before progressing to A1 Movers and A2 Flyers.

What is the Cambridge Pre A1 Starters exam? 

The Pre A1 Starters exam is an introductory-level test for children who are beginning their language journey. It is designed to be engaging and enjoyable, focusing on practical skills that children can use in their daily lives. Note on Progression: This is the entry level of the Young Learners suite. Most candidates are between 7 and 8 years old and have completed approximately 100 hours of English lessons. It is the perfect way to show children that exams can be a rewarding and positive experience.

Preparing for the Pre A1 Starters exam helps your child learn basic English in a way that feels natural. They will learn how to: 
  • Recognise and name basic colours and objects in English. 
  • Answer very simple questions about themselves and their family. 
  • Write short, one-word answers to basic questions. 
  • Follow simple instructions and participate in basic conversations.

Important Format Note: To provide the most comfortable and familiar experience for younger learners, the Pre A1 Starters exam is available exclusively in a paper-based format. Unlike our higher-level qualifications (such as B1 Preliminary or B2 First), which offer digital options, this format allows younger children to focus entirely on their language skills in a way that feels natural to them.

In the Young Learners Starters series, there is no pass or fail. We believe every child’s effort deserves to be celebrated to keep them motivated for the next steps in their education. 

Instead of a grade, your child will receive a certificate showing a number of "shields" (up to five for each part of the test). This visual feedback highlights what they have achieved rather than what they have missed. No. Pre A1 Starters is the first of three exams in the Young Learners (YLE) suite. Once your child has built their confidence at this level, they can progress to A1 Movers and then A2 Flyers. 

Every child who takes the exam receives a certificate. There is no pass or fail; the results are shown in "shields" to highlight their strengths and encourage them to continue their journey.
